 Brett Gore

    School:    Union City

    Grade:    Sophomore

          Height:    6-0

    Weight:    205

    Pos.:  Linebacker

By the numbers: Gore was a key part of a Tornado defense that — after a fiery locker room speech from UCHS Principal and former Tornado coordinator Wes Kennedy — allowed just 72 yards and four first downs in the second half after giving up 20 points over the first two quarters vs. Huntingdon. Playing with a nagging knee injury that has limited him to defense-only, he finished with 14 solo tackles in all. Several of those stops were at or near the line of scrimmage as UC allowed just one second-half score — that after a second turnover in its own territory in the fourth quarter.

Sound bite: “I was real proud of Gore and our entire defense in the second half,” Twister head coach Darren Bowling said. “Gore did a better job of reading his keys and made a bunch of good, physical hits. He’s young and still learning, but he absolutely loves the game and has a chance to be a really good two-way player for us if he continues to work hard, both during the season and in the weight room. ”

HONORABLE MENTION:  Josh Quinton, OC junior lineman, finished with a team-high 17 tackles (11 solo) in the Rebels’ 46-13 loss at Cape Girardeau. Michael Dysart, UC junior lineman, had six individual hits, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Willy Kneuppel, SF sophomore linebacker, finished with eight stops — one for lost yardage — and a fumble recovery. Trey Maddox, UC senior linebacker, recorded nine solo tackles. Joe Ferguson, OC senior linebacker, had 11 tackles, two for minus-yardage.
