Baker Brothers Poultry of Obion is the recipient of the 2010 Tennessee Poultry Farm Family of the Year Award presented by the Tennessee Poultry Association (TPA).
The award was presented during the association’s annual meeting in Nashville.
Sam Baker and his wife, Brenda, co-own and operate the diversified family farm operation with O’Neil Baker and his wife, Nancy. The family farmers raise breeder hens for Tyson Foods Inc.-Obion County.
In addition to operating their farm, the Bakers are involved in many outreach programs that expose others to agriculture and the poultry industry. They are active members of the Tennessee Poultry Association, for which Brenda Baker serves as secretary-treasurer.
“The Bakers are stewards of the land and are superior representatives of the poultry industry and agriculture as a whole,” said Tyson Foods’ Shane Joyner, who nominated the Bakers for the award. “They strive to be the best at what they do and help others understand the importance of what agriculture is to our nation. They help others understand that their food doesn’t just come from the grocery store, but rather that it was produced with pride by local farmers.”
This is the first year for the award that honors poultry farmers who excel in overall operation performance and demonstrate exceptional dedication to family and service to the community.
As winners of the 2010 Tennessee Poultry Farm Family of the Year award, the Bakers received a $500 prize and an expense-paid trip to attend the TPA annual meeting.
TPA members are breeders, growers, processors, educators, researchers and allied businesses involved in the production of chicken. The organization is headquartered in Murfreesboro.
