Union City police were forced to shoot a dog that allegedly charged at officers in an aggressive manner early Saturday.
The incident occurred shortly before 4 a.m. in the 3400 block of Lakeview Drive, according to a Union City Police Department report.
A resident of the neighborhood told police she was standing at her front door and had let her own dog out about four hours earlier when a Great Dane breed dog walked into her backyard with her dog. She said she attempted to go out to retrieve her dog, but the Great Dane chased her back into her house. After several hours, the woman called police.
Officers reported they went around the house and said when the Great Dane saw them, the dog ran toward them “in an aggressive manner.” One officer fired two shots with his duty pistol and another officer fired one shot from his duty shotgun, fatally wounding the dog, according to the report.
The dog, which was wearing a collar with a name on it, belonged to Stevie Moran of 2166 Brevard Road, police reported. The owner was contacted and came to the scene to retrieve the dog.
