Maurices in County Marketplace at 1700  West Reelfoot Ave. in Union City will be collecting financial donations and pet supplies to benefit local animal shelter Pudge-n-Pals throughout the month of September and into early October.
As a token of appreciation, customers who support the effort will receive a coupon valid at Maurices.
Specific items needed by Pudge-n-Pals include wet and dry dog and puppy food; dry and wet cat and kitten food; treats and toys for animals; stainless steel or galvanized buckets, bowls and pans; cat litter, litter boxes and scoops; cedar chips; leashes, collars and harnesses; brushes, combs, clippers and shampoos; pet medications such as heartworm preventatives  and flea and tick medicine; tarps and bungee cords; and tubs or pools.
A store spokesman said the local drive began Sept. 1 and will run through Oct.  9. The store is open from 10 a.m.-9 p.m.
In addition, Maurices will be hosting the second annual Rescues & Runways fashion show Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. at the Obion County Fairgrounds in Union City — where the latest fall fashions and some adoptable pets from Pudge-n-Pals will be featured.
A silent auction will also be held during the event to raise money for the non-profit organization. Local businesses such as Lowe’s, American Cellular, the Chocolate Bunny, Higher Ground and many more have donated items to support the silent auction, a spokesman said.
Rescues & Runways is a national campaign created by Maurices, in partnership with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). In its second year, the goals of this program have remained the same: to increase awareness of animal shelters, in turn increasing pet adoptions through pet-themed fashion shows.
More than 750 Maurices locations across the U.S. are hosting the fashion shows along with raising supply and cash donations for animal shelters.
Anyone interested in modeling in the local fashion show or interested in helping with this event can contact local Maurices store manager Jenni Cloar at 885-8836.
In its inaugural year in 2009, stores raised an impressive $125,091 for shelters across the United States through the Rescues & Runways effort. Stores also collected and donated 67,000 pounds of food and supplies to local shelters and over 1,000 pets were adopted during September 2009.
For the 2010 initiative, all 750-plus stores will be participating, which could help over 750 animal shelters nationwide.
Maurices is a women’s specialty retailer with over 750 locations in 44 states. Most stores carry sizes 1-24 in a variety of styles, from casual to dressy to fun pieces to wear at work. The company has a strong belief in giving back and being true partners within their local communities.
