Cadet major Stanley Jones, 16-year-old son of Gordon and Jeanie Jones of South Fulton, has earned several honors at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., where he is a senior and the battalion commander — or top cadet — for the 2010-11 year.
Jones has been attending Hargrove since his freshman year and earned his current position as battalion commander after a competitive interview process, evaluation of his character and review of his record of achievement at the school.
He leads a senior class of 66 cadets, who help him lead Hargrave’s entire Corps of Cadets.
Jones’ other honors in-clude the Martha C. Rucker Prize for the top grade point average, which includes a scholarship endowed to a rising senior; the highest academic average for the 11th grade; academic excellence in history; and a math and science award which includes a $60,000 scholarship to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.
He has also achieved his Eagle Scout ranking; been the recipient of the Outstanding Junior Varsity Sportsmanship Award for two years; served as co-captain of the lacrosse team; earned varsity letters in football, lacrosse and swimming, as well as been the Virginia Independent Conference swim team champion; been a candidate for Boys State; served as president of Beta Club; been named to Mu Alpha Theta National High School Math Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society; and attended a summer seminar at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
