HOHENWALD (AP) — The Elephant Sanctuary has announced the appointment of a new CEO to run the not-for-profit wildlife refuge in Lewis County.
Robert Atkinson is currently the head of wildlife for the United Kingdom’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and will assume his new duties in November.
The former CEO and co-founder, Carol Buckley, was fired earlier this year.
The sanctuary operates on 2,700 acres in Hohenwald, about 85 miles southwest of Nashville, for Asian and African elephants that have been retired from zoos and circuses.
Atkinson said in a news release the sanctuary has been a place of healing and refuge for captive elephants in need for the past 15 years.
