The Westview Lady Chargers erupted after halftime with six goals to blow open a close game on the way to a 7-0 win over the visiting South Fulton Lady Red Devils on Monday.
The win provided Westview first-year head coach Matt Cupples with his first victory and evened the Lady Chargers’ record to 1-1 after a 9-1 loss to Henry County in their season debut on Aug. 26 at Paris.
“I was excited tonight. We’re nowhere near where we need to be on offense yet, but we’ll get clicking,” Cupples said.
Against SF’s first-year program, the Lady Chargers had plenty of shots in the first half, but all were wide or high. The lone WHS goal of the first half came on an own goal by the inexperienced Lady Devils. Westview senior Maggie Blackwell was pressuring in the penalty box to force the SF mistake.
“We were trigger happy. Our seniors (Blackwell, Ava Abad, Melissa Johnson and Macy Vincent) wanted to put on a good show for everybody,” Cupples noted.
After the half the floodgates opened. Kayla Guthrie netted three goals. Johnson knocked in a pair, and Shelby Donavant added a penalty kick. Regan Ward had an assist in the win. Brooklyn Stevenson helped preserve the shutout with a late hustle play on defense.
