despite Labor Day
The Messenger sports staff won’t be taking Labor Day off.
The weekly Sports-Monday section will be included in Monday’s edition of the paper.
The four-page pullout section will include coverage of Union City, Obion Central, South Fulton and Fulton City at the prep level as well as details from the first-ever football game between Tennessee and UT Martin.
In other news pertaining to the newspaper’s sports coverage, scores from a dozen prep games, including those of games involving Obion County games, can be viewed online tonight and every Friday by 11 at www.nwtntoday.com.
SF gets run in time
to edge out Clinton
Brooke Parnell chased home Alli Ruddle in the bottom of the sixth inning to give South Fulton a 5-4 victory over Clinton in middle school softball action Thursday evening.
Parnell drove Ruddle in on a fielder’s choice with no outs in the frame. Ruddle had reached on what was described as a perfect slap bunt single by Devilette coach Curt Lee.
Winning pitcher Kristin Crocker struck out seven.
Offensively, Crocker, Melanie Johnson, Aa-lia Bivens, Sydney Easterwood, Maddie Kate Coffey, Aeriel Wright, Moranda Johns and Amanda Allen all had one hit. Bivens drove in a pair.
South Fulton (6-0) returns to the diamond at home on Tuesday against Hillcrest.

Ridgemont rallied for two runs in the sixth inning under international tiebreaker rules to best Martin 6-4 on the middle school softball diamond Thursday.
Winning pitcher Sher-idan Bugg assisted her mound cause with two singles. Lady Mustang teammate Jessica Hobbs had a single and a double, while Landry Webster smacked a pair of two-baggers and Macy Muirhead had two singles.
Emily Moore and Kea-ton Cooper both singled for the victors.
Ridgemont plays Black Oak on Tuesday at Obion Central.
Hickman gal victors
finish with slim lead
The team of Jacque Lethcoe, LeeAnn Gantt, Kathy Baker and Liz Roberts finished in first place with a score of 4-under-par to win the Hickman Country Club’s Ladies League outing on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the combination of Betty Moore, Carole Lattus, Wanda Brown, Janis Garrigan and Anne Kincade earned second at 3-under.
Carol Potts was the closest to the pin.

Obion Central will host its football alumni tonight prior to its homecoming game against Crockett County.
All former Rebel football players are encouraged to come out for an hour-long get-together at 5:30 in the east endzone of the football field on campus.
Refreshments will be served.
