H’crest denies LR; Eagles down Pilots
Hillcrest had just enough in the end during its 34-30 triumph over Lake Road.
The Cougars, who had trailed after the first, second and third quarters, held the Generals out of the endzone with a redzone stand during the final two minutes to procure the triumph after a fourth-quarter rally.
In other junior high football action on Thursday, Black Oak routed Fulton County 28-6.
Hillcrest 34, LR 30
Cougar Bryce Warner rushed for 193 yards and totaled four touchdowns — a 98-yard kickoff return included — to account for much of his team’s offensive yardage and scoring.
Defensively, Hunter Brady made seven stops and forced a fumble for Hillcrest (2-1), while Dylan Porch accounted for five stops and an interception.
Jessie Ursery and Dakota McCord had five and four tackles, respectively.
Lake Road quarterback Blake Berner was 6-of-12 for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Rushing-wise, Garrett Riley ran for 78 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
Riley also caught three passes for 95 yards and one touchdown, while Juan Morales hauled in a 12-yard score.
On defense, the Generals (0-3) had Garrett Riley and Tyler Mosely with six stops each.
LR coach Shawn Johnson also lauded the play of the offensive line.
BO 28, Fulton Co. 6
Black Oak struck for 20 points in the first quarter and never looked back on Thursday night.
Eagle quarterbacks Dalton Campbell and Zac Jones combined to go 6-of-19 for two touchdowns.
Campbell found Brandon Swift for a 50-yard scoring strike, while Campbell connected with Lane Baker on a 25-yard aerial touchdown.
On the ground, Campbell totaled 66 yards — an 18-yard TD included.
Defensively, Blake Bullion topped the tackle chart for Black Oak (1-1) with nine stops, while Brandon Swift and Jonathan North had five takedowns for a unit that forced three fumbles.
BO’s Jonah Pittman also blocked a punt.
The Eagles travel to South Fulton next Thursday.
