YOU ‘QUACK’ ME UP

Daffy
YOU ‘QUACK’ ME UP — Union City Elementary School fifth-graders Taylor Bowling (left) and Taylor Crittendon giggle as a young duck nips at their fingers and tries to grab their hair in teacher Jennifer Bruff’s classroom. The young mallard, named Daffy by the students, was adopted by Mrs. Bruff’s class when she was just a couple of weeks old. She was rescued by Miss Crittendon’s father, Terry Crittendon, and brought to the classroom so the students could watch her grow. She will return to the wild when she is old enough and big enough to defend herself. In the meantime, the students have been learning firsthand how behavioral imprinting works with certain animals as Daffy follows them around during their school day.
