Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
30 Years Ago
Sept. 6 — Obion Central edged Westview 7-6 in its season-opening football game. The Rebels’ only score came in the first quarter when Timmy Morris dove in from three yards away. Lawrence Robertson kicked the point-after for what turned out to be the deciding tally. All totaled, the Chargers outgained OC 254-197, but still lost.
Sept. 6 — Union City blanked Trenton 14-0 in the season opener for both football programs. Twister quarterback Brent Young finished 6-for-10 with 106 yards passing — a 24-yard Tornado touchdown connection to Jonathan Turner included. Young also darted 24 yards to the endzone. Trent Arnold booted both UC extra points.

Sept. 4 — LaDarrian Bishop and Anthony Dysart each rushed for two touchdowns as Union City routed Obion Central 35-0 in the annual meeting between the rival schools. Bishop made runs of 51 and 6 yards to paydirt, while Dysart’s trips to the endzone were from 19 and 2 yards out. Marcus Lewis also took in a five-yard score for Union City. The Rebels lost seven fumbles.
Sept. 7 — Union City Middle School bested Hickman 28-12 on the gridiron. Untwon Bishop dashed 30 and 35 yards to the endzone. David Barnes also made a 30-yard trip to paydirt. Additionally, Josh Gregory made a 15-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the victorious Tornadoes.

Sept. 4 — B.J. Gordon totaled 149 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries as South Fulton defeated Gleason 29-12. James Bell had a 22-yard TD run for the Red Devils, while Nick Frazier caught an 18-yard scoring pass from Michael Crockett for South Fulton. Wade Maddox provided one of the few highlights for the Bulldog bunch, returning a kickoff 87 yards to paydirt.
Sept. 6 — Union City claimed bragging rights on the middle school gridiron. The Twisters edged South Fulton 14-6 in the meeting between Obion County’s two biggest middle school football programs. Kenyon Ingram and Rayhon Junior each had one touchdown for UC, while Blake Guess carried in a two-point conversion for the victors. SF’s lone score came when quarter Adam Hicks found Donald Dickerson for a 25-yard aerial score.

Sept. 2 — South Fulton routed Fulton City 58-6 on the junior high gridiron. Joey Henderson returned a kickoff  84 yards for a Red Devil score, while Jacob Wade, Tyler Nolan, Breck Young and Montre Lewis each accounted for one touchdown. Defensively, Hunter Allen led SF with seven tackles and a fumble recovery.
Sept. 5 — Union City shellacked Lake County 38-12 on the high school gridiron. The Twisters scored the first 31 points in the game. UC’s Nate Coleman made touchdown runs of 33 and 25 yards, while teammate John Graham booted a 34-yard field goal. Chris Wardlow dove in from a yard out, while Demetrius Bracey caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Sherwood. Colton Speed dashed 70 yards for a UC score.

Sept. 4 — The Obion Central girls’ soccer team made history. The Lady Rebel team — in its first year of existence — claimed its first victory with a 3-1 decision over Trenton. Katie Beth Vancleave booted a goal for OC as did Kelsey Jackson and Hope Montgomery.
Sept. 7 — Union City battered Trenton 48-0 in the District 14A opener for both teams. Kendrick Price, who totaled a team-best 110 yards on 12 carries, made an 11-yard run to the endzone. Junior quarterback Chase Bowling took in three scores, while Josh Nicks, Raphe Alexander and Drake Parker had one touchdown each for the Twisters. All totaled, Union City outgained the Golden Tide 409-90.
