Zippin Pippin being restored Posted: Wednesday, September 1, 2010 8:01 pm GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — An effort to bring Elvis Presley’s favorite ride to Green Bay is one step closer. Door County resident, Doug McGee, has given a $100,000 contribution to the Zippin Pippin fundraising effort. Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt joined McGee and others during groundbreaking ceremonies last week. It is a recreation of a historic wooden roller coaster that operated for many years in Memphis and was renowned as Presley’s favorite amusement park ride. To obtain the Zippin Pippin rights and build a replica, the city is borrowing $2.4 million and trying to raise $600,000 in private donations. Schmitt tells the Green Bay Press-Gazette that donations have totaled $255,000 so far, including McGee’s contribution. The grand opening is expected next May. ——— Information from: Green Bay Press-Gazette, http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com Published in The Messenger 9.1.10 , |
