WCP 8.31.10 We just finished another busy month of activities. The Rook players finished a three-week tournament with the folks at the Dresden and Sharon Senior Centers.
Each center took turns hosting the tournament. We want to congratulate the winners and those who participated in the tournament.
We want to do this event again next year. Please keep a check on us for the time and place.
During July and August, our group of seniors had a donation box set up in the center for school supplies.
In the beginning of the donation drive, we asked for paper towels, hand sanitizer and Kleenex boxes.
In the end, our seniors had a donation box full of different types of school supplies. Our school supplies went directly to the Martin Elementary School.
Jill was here on Aug. 11 for exercise group day. We are always ready to see Jill come from Greenbrier to help up enjoy the day.
We also have an exercise contest going on until the middle of September. Everyone is invited to participate in this exercise commitment.
We have a total exercise room set up for those who would like to come and workout. This is free to all seniors.
I had a meeting on Friday, and we will receive some training for new exercises coming our way in the near future.
On Aug. 5, Tennessee Quality Hospice came and did blood pressure checks for everyone at the center.
In addition on Aug. 19, they came and gave a presentation on how to recognize and treat heat emergencies. This was very informative. We appreciate the time they take to come speak to us.
This month’s potluck was decorated with an Italian theme. Our main dish was spaghetti with salad, side dishes and a host of desserts.
The tables were decorated with white and red tablecloths. The candle-lit theme bottles were placed on each table for an Italian atmosphere.
Ed Knight and Carla Fields did our entertainment for the day. The food was good, the atmosphere was great, and the music was outstanding.
If you did not get to come to potluck, then you truly missed something. Remember to mark the calendar for each month’s potluck. Potlucks are always held on the third Thursday each month at 11:30 a.m. Bring a dish and join the atmosphere.
On Aug. 19, we recognized our Senior Olympians who participated in the senior games held this past summer.
We also had several from the community that attended the state Olympics in Franklin.
I hope to see all them at the nationals, which will be held early next year in Texas.
The Soybean Festival will be Sept. 4-12. We will be very busy with the community during this time.
Our first project will be the Big Bingo at the center on Sept. 7-8 from 1-3 p.m.
Last year, we had such a huge success with The Big Bingo that we decided to do it again this year.
We are selling tickets for the Soybean Quilt. The quilt was donated by Shirley Murphy and the ladies of our quilting group.
Along with the quilt, we have a hand painted pictured donated by Jean Johnson.
The quilts will be on display throughout the senior center. On Thursday, Sept. 9, you can meet our quilters while they are quilting.
There will also be a Soybean Breakfast on Sept. 10 held 6-10 a.m. Plates cost $4 and includes eggs, bacon, sausage, homemade gravy and biscuits with orange juice or coffee.
For more information on this and other activities, visit the senior center or call 587-3900.
