WCP 8.31.10 August activities in the Lighthouse Community began with a celebration to honor the birthday of comedian and movie star actress Lucille Ball. She was born on Aug. 6, 1911.
Ball played in movies such as “Yours, Mines, and Ours.” She was also a star of the 1950s television series, “The Lucy Show.”
In her honor, on Aug. 6, we watched various episodes of the television series, “The Lucy Show,” ate snacks and drank juice.
The residents enjoyed watching Ball and all her funny antics.
Another activity we had was “Relaxation Day.” We decided to take a break and slow down with a day of relaxation because of the hot weather and exhausting activities we have.
This activity was inspired by National Relaxation Day, which is celebrated on Aug. 15.
On a Tuesday afternoon, we played soothing rain forest sounds on the CD player and read the book, “The Sunsets of Miss Olivia Wiggins.”
The book is about a woman who has Alzheimer’s disease and stays in a nursing home. She has frequent visits from her daughter and great-grandson.
Although Miss Wiggins cannot speak, the book illustrates that she often thinks of various past events that happened in her life.
It’s a great book for people who need a better understanding of Alzheimer’s disease.
It also shows the value and importance of visiting loved ones with or without Alzheimer’s or dementia.
Having a relaxation day is a good idea for agitated residents. It also words for high or low functioning capabilities.
The group seemed to really enjoy the soothing sounds. Many of them tried to guess the sounds they heard from the CD. They also enjoyed the book and seemed so relaxed by this activity.
As always, we finished our activities for the month with our August Birthday Party.
Birthdays for this month includes Ada Vincent, who turned 90 on Aug. 3, Lee Stepp, who turned 76 on Aug. 5, Jerry Gallimore and Frances Pierce, who both turned 79 on Aug. 7, and Alexine Anthony, who turned 83 on Aug. 11.
Food served at the party included cake and ice cream.
