Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
30 Years Ago
Aug. 29 — UT Martin freshman Duane Lewis quit the football team. The 6-foot-1, 200 pounder from Munford was listed as a backup fullback on the squad’s depth chart. In other Pacer football team news, Gary Hawkinson, Billy Wilkins and Tommy Overton all returned to the gridiron after sitting out due to injury.
Aug. 30 — Fulton County bested Fulton City 13-7 on the high school gridiron. The Pilots wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, returning the opening kickoff 80 yards to paydirt. The second Fulton County score came in the fourth quarter when quarterback Darrell Holder threw a 15-yard touchdown pass. The Bulldogs got their lone points of the evening in the fourth when quarterback Greg Greer snuck into the endzone.

Aug. 28 — A total of 11 former student-athletes were announced as the newest class of the Union City High School Hall of Honors. Two-time state discus champion Jenny Jernigan headed the list along with 1989 football All-Stater Mark Zipp. Others pegged for induction into the UC Hall were Richard Beckett, Heather Clauson, Mary Jane Smith-McElrath, Pattye Bennett, Alison Rippy, Menta Thompson, Brian Church, D.D. Allen and Christy Mathias.
Aug. 31 — The Union City High School golf team fell 163-167 in a match against Henry County. Joe David Hamblen had the low score for the Tornadoes — a 39. Otherwise, Spencer Cultra carded a 41, Billy Dowell Jr. fired a 43 and Bill Davis finished with a 44.

Aug. 28 — Obion Central blanked Dresden 34-0 in its football season opener. Houston Preciado had two touchdowns for the Rebels during the victory. Otherwise, Stevie Brown and Cory Robertson each ran for one score, while Jeffrey Naugle hauled in a 30-yard TD pass from Zach Roberts.
Aug. 29 — The South Fulton “B” team walloped Ballard Memorial 28-6. Mitchell Maynard, Andrew Ware and Rick Larson each had one rushing touchdown for the Red Devils. Zach Parham also connected with Josh Parrish for a passing score.

Aug. 26 — Dylan Nanney booted a field goal with just five seconds remaining to lift Dresden to a 25-22 victory over Obion Central. Jacob Fulbright made two trips to paydirt for the Rebels. Fulbright’s first touchdown was a 22-yard run, while his second score came from 15 yards. Garrett Grady also dove in from a yard out for an OC six-pointer.
Aug. 31 — The Union City Middle School football team battered Three Oaks 30-6. Treymar Johnson ran for a pair of Twister touchdowns, while Kendrick Price made a 21-yard trip to paydirt. UCMS quarterback Jacob Worley also found K.J. Brooks for a 60-yard scoring toss.

Aug. 28 — South Fulton shellacked Fulton City 40-6 on the middle school gridiron. Tymaine Strickland rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Strickland also returned an interception for a score. Otherwise, Kyle Watkins made one run to the endzone. Watkins also took in a pair of two-point conversions. Finally, Skylar Britt bulled his way across the goalline from seven yards out.
Sept. 1 — Ridgemont did what was previously unthinkable. The Lady Mustangs run-ruled perennial softball powerhouse South Fulton (12-2) on the middle school diamond. Emily Pickard doubled twice for the victors, while Macy McClure smacked a two-bagger for R’mont. Sheridan Bugg was a perfect 3-for-3 for the Lady Mustangs. Aalia Bivens and Sydney Easterwood both singled for South Fulton.
