By the numbers: With the graduation of record-setting fullback Josh Nicks leaving a gaping hole in UC’s midline/veer offense, Darren Bowling simply plugged in the promising Hyde and the Tornadoes seemingly never missed a beat against Trigg County. Hyde ran for 303 yards and four touchdowns in 42 carries — three of those TDs coming in the fourth quarter when the Twisters rallied from a 14-point deficit to a thrilling 42-28 victory over the host Wildcats. Hyde got better and certainly more productive as the game wore on, rushing for 212 yards with nine runs of 10 yards or more in the second half. His scoring plays covered 14, 8, 22 and 27 yards, the last two coming in the final 46 seconds to account for the winning and insurance touchdowns.

Sound bite: “Keylon got more comfortable and certainly more confident as the game wore on,” Bowling, the UC head coach, said of Hyde’s effort. “As a fullback, in this offense, you have to be patient and keep plugging, and he did that. And I thought our folks up front, most of them who were young and seeing their first time in a starting role, really settled down and were steady in the second half when we were more physical and took control because we were better conditioned.”

HONORABLE MENTION: LaDevin Fair, OC junior running back, scored on three of his six touches in his Rebel debut — an abbreviated 35-6 win over Fulton County that was shortened to less than a half due to lightning. Fair ran for TDs covering seven and 24 yards  and also had an electrifying 75-yard punt return for a score.
