By the numbers: Scales was a certainly a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball for a Purple and Gold unit that made some glaring mistakes, but several key stops as well vs. Trigg County. He finished with 10 tackles in all, three of those behind the line of scrimmage — including a quarterback sack of Andrew Stewart in the first half. He also deflected a pass from Wildcat backup Hunter Allen on the game’s final series.

Sound bite: “Kelly’s always had the physical makeup to be a good player on both sides of the ball. He’s a senior now, and he’s been put in a role where we need production out of him on the defensive side and for him to step up and be a solid lineman offensively. He did a good job at both spots Friday. We need to get pressure on the quarterback to help take some of the pressure off an inexperienced secondary, and our No. 1 goal always is to stop the run. That he was in on that many tackles tells you he was instrumental in us doing that, except for the couple of times when they broke big plays,” Bowling said.

HONORABLE MENTION: Stephen Patton, OC senior linebacker, set the tone for the Rebels’ 35-6 triumph over Fulton County with an interception on the first snap of the game. Patton ended up with two picks, a pair of sacks and eight tackles in all — five solos — in OC’s win. Trey Maddox, UC senior linebacker, had six solo tackles, two for lost yardage.
