MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin soccer team will host a free clinic for children ages 5-15 immediately following the team’s season opener against Mississippi State Friday afternoon at Skyhawk Soccer Field.
The Skyhawks’ season opener against the visiting Bulldogs gets under way at 4 p.m. and the clinic will follow immediately following the match.
“We want to encourage all soccer fans in Northwest Tennessee to attend our season opener,” said first-year UT Martin head coach Phil McNamara. “We want to introduce the team and our staff to the area fans. Come out and get an autograph or two.”
McNamara, assistant UT Martin soccer coach Leslie Marcouiller and the Skyhawks will actually serve as instructors for the clinic.
The Skyhawks — the defending OVC regular-season champions — play a non-conference schedule that includes teams from six other leagues, and two independent schools.
The Mississippi State Bulldogs of the Southeastern Conference went 9-8-2 last season and will be the third SEC opponent to ever visit Skyhawk Field and first since Alabama in 2002. Ole Miss also came to Martin in 1998.
After the home opener, the Skyhawks hit the road for five matches, beginning with a trip to Jonesboro, Ark., to take on the Arkansas State Red Wolves of the Sun Belt Conference on Aug. 22. Five days later, UT Martin will take on in-state rival and Atlantic Sun Conference member Lipscomb before traveling to Springfield, Mo., to face Missouri State, which finished in second place in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 9-6-3 overall record in 2009.
UT Martin returns to Skyhawk Field on Sept. 10 when it takes on the Evansville Purple Aces of the MVC. Two days later, the Skyhawks will take on IPFW of the Summit League at home.
“We plan on going into the season knowing the schedule is very difficult,” McNamara said. “It’s a fresh start with the new coaching staff and we will need to come together quickly in order to be successful with this schedule.”
Local soccer fans are invited to come out to Skyhawk Field Friday and enjoy free pizza during The University of Tennessee at Martin’s 2010 season-opener against Mississippi State of the Southeastern Conference at 4 p.m.
First-year head coach Phil McNamara has made arrangements for 1,000 slices of pizza to be delivered to Skyhawk Field for his UT Martin coaching debut, available free to fans of all ages throughout the match until supplies last.
“The UT Martin administration, staff and community has offered both my family and I such a warm welcome,” McNamara said. “This is just a small token of my appreciation and I hope they enjoy the game.”
Following the match, the Skyhawk coaches and players also will conduct a free clinic for all children ages 5-15. The clinic will begin around 10 minutes after the conclusion of the match. Fans will get the chance to meet and interact with McNamara, assistant coach Leslie Marcouiller and all 21 players following the conclusion of the clinic.
Clinic participants are encouraged to eat their free pizza at 4 p.m., while the rest of the fans and UT Martin faculty/staff will be served around 5 p.m.
The Skyhawks – who won their first-ever Ohio Valley Conference championship last season – will not return for a home match for another three weeks, so this will be a great opportunity to come out and support the team.
