| Union City at Trigg Co. (Tonight) |
PLACE, TIME: Cadiz, 7:30 p.m.
2009 RECORDS: UC 12-2; Trigg Co. 7-5.
COACHES (RECORDS): Union City: Darren Bowling (129-66 in 17th season; 22-4 in 3rd year at UC); Trigg Co.: Shannon Burcham (22-15 in 4th season at TC).
LAST MEETING: 2009. UC won 45-6.
SERIES RECORD — Union City leads, 1-0.
NEXT WEEK — Union City has an open date. TC plays at Mayfield.
KEY PLAYERS: Union City — QB Chase Bowling, RB/LB Keylon Hyde, OL/LB Trey Maddox, OL/DL Nick Crumble, RB/DB Deandrez Williams. Trigg Co. — QB Andrew Stewart, RB Akeem Wilson, WR Nick Watkins and Jaron Gilbert.
OUTLOOK: The Tornadoes open defense of their Class 1A state championship out of state against a Wildcat bunch that lost four of its first five games last year before winning six in a row and making it to the second round of the Kentucky playoffs. UC is replacing 17 starters from last year’s title team, including record-setting bruising fullback Josh Nicks and three other all-staters. Union City’s suspect pass defense will likely get an immediate test as Stewart can sling it and is a good athlete in the Wildcats’ spread set. TC did lose four of five offensive linemen to graduation and but one starter along the DL returns.
Lake Co. at Fulton City (Tonight)
PLACE, TIME: Memorial Field, 7:30 p.m.
2009 RECORDS: Lake Co. 7-5; Fulton City 2-9.
COACHES (RECORDS): Lake County: David Barger (37-38 in 8th season, 28-17 in 4 previous seasons at LC); Fulton City: Brad Rozzell (0-0 in 1st season).
LAST MEETING: 2009. Lake Co. won, 70-19.
NEXT WEEK — Lake County hosts Fulton County, while Fulton City plays at Gleason.
KEY PLAYERS: Lake County — QB Sam Hayes, RBs Ricky Boyd and Rafeal Tyler, WR Caleb Bledsoe. Fulton City — RB/S Rondell Bransford, WR/S Adam Hamrick, FB/LB Bubba Kirby, WR/LB Justin Kight, OL/DL Lerinzo Ruiz.
OUTLOOK: If the preseason is any indication, this one could get out of hand quickly — just as last year’s season-opener for both teams did. LC has shown early signs of promise with the return of Barger, who left after a previous four-year stint in Tiptonville for three seasons at Chattanooga Central. The Falcons have several good skill players back with Hayes, a three-year starter, headlining that group. Fulton City struggled miserably in a jamboree outing vs. Greenfield last week, pummeled 41-0 in less than a full game.
Fulton Co. at Obion Central (Sat.)
PLACE, TIME: Rebel Field, Troy, 7 p.m.
2009 RECORDS: Fulton Co. 0-10; OC 6-5.
COACHES (RECORDS): Fulton Co.: Deatrik Kinney (0-0 in 1st season); OC: Shawn Jackson (13-18 in 4th season, 6-15 in 3rd season at OC).
SERIES RECORD — Obion Central leads, 9-2.
NEXT WEEK — Fulton County plays at Lake County, while Obion Central hosts Sikeston.
KEY PLAYERS: Fulton County — QB/S Dillion Johnson, WR/LB Leonard Smith, WR/LB Billy Workman. Obion Central — RB LaDevin Fair, QB Trey Phipps, LB Steven Patton, OL Spenser Maloney, WRs Shawn Weaks and Tanner Cary.
OUTLOOK: Fulton County comes in looking to break an 18-game losing streak that dates back to the second week of the 2008 season. OC was in a similar situation a year ago and recorded a resounding 52-14 triumph to break a two-year, 20-game skid. The game will be a reunion of sorts for Central’s Fair, who rushed for more than 800 yards in each of his first two seasons on the varsity level at Fulton County before transferring in the offseason when his father was hired as a paraprofessional coach at OC. The game is part of a three-game home stand to open the season for the Rebels, who went 5-1 at home last season on their own turf.
