30 Years Ago
Aug. 15 — Greg Hamilton claimed the championship at the Ken-Tenn Bass Club Tournament. Meanwhile, Roy Goodsine claimed second place and big bass honors, while Dr. Roy Winston came in third.
Aug. 16 — New UT Martin head football coach Lynn Amedee announced the beginning of summer drills. The Pacer team was set to return 32 lettermen and at least eight starters on both sides of the pigskin. Amedee was hired in the offseason after serving as the quarterbacks coach at Tennessee.

Aug. 14 — Dennis Chapman was named the new Union City High School baseball coach. Chapman, who was also the UCHS girls’ basketball coach and track skipper, replaces Charles Archer. Archer asked to be relieved of his diamond duties during the offseason. As a result of Chapman’s being named the baseball skipper, he relinquished his girls’ track team duties. Alicia Mays was appointed to take over the girls’ track team at Union City.

Aug. 15 — The Obion Central golf team finished second to Milan in a five-team match at Trenton. The Rebels came to the clubhouse with a score of 186 — 10 shots off the Bulldogs’ pace. Blake Pryor shot a team-best 44 for OC, while Brandon Nicks carded a 45 and Luke Stover finished with a 47. Seth Lofton totaled a 50 for the Rebels.
Aug. 17 — Lee Harris of Ripley recorded a hole-in-one at Wynridge Greens in Troy. Harris’ ace came on hole No. 7 with a sand wedge as his club of choice.

Aug. 12 — The Dirt Squirts eight-and-under team claimed the regular season and tournament championship in the Obion County Girls Softball League. Team members were Mikayla Scillion, Mallory Randolph, Paige Russell, Jodiana Jacobs, Stella Preuett, Peyton Baggett, Eternity Elam, Sheridan Bugg, Bailey Daniel, Elizabeth Driver, Monica Hill and Tatum Cary. Tom Elam, Jeremy Bugg and Dale Hill served as coaches for the team.
Aug. 16 — Goodyear associate Glen Hale recorded a hole-in-one during regular scramble action at the Goodyear Wingfoot Golf Course. Hale’s ace came on the 140-yard hole No. 12. Witnesses to his shot were Don Day, Jimmy and Brian Rose, Tracy Hale, Scott Caulk and Cory Carpenter.

Aug. 12 — Ripley literally didn’t show up for its scheduled scrimmage against Union City. The UC team, along with fans and coaches, waited for the Tigers’ arrival well after the scheduled 6 p.m. start time. Ripley mentor Al Pelligrino claimed he had left several messages for Twister coach Darren Bowling in an attempt to make it known that his team was not coming. The scrimmage was to be the fourth of the preseason for Union City, which had outscored Wayne County, Fayette Academy and Gibson County 12-1 in three previous exhibitions.
Aug. 14 — The Union City Middle School football team drubbed Fulton County 46-0. Jamie Hyde ran for a total of four touchdowns for the Tornadoes. Meanwhile, Dontarius Owens returned a punt for a score and Iroa Smith made a 23-yard dash to the endzone. Defensively, Kane Taylor paced UC with a team-best five stops.
