Messenger Sports Briefs for August 12

Weekly Pop outing
goes to scorecard

Poplar Meadows Country Club held its weekly scramble Wednesday with the winning team shooting 8-under par.
The winning team, in a scorecard playoff, included Chris Tidwell, Randy Chism, David Sturkie, Robert King, Tony Westbrook and Matt Sanner.
Also shooting 8-under was the team of Ross Clark, Frank Clark, John Slayton, Grant Simmons, Adam Reeves and Chris Snider.
The scramble begins at 5:30 p.m. each Wednesday. The cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. The fee includes dinner.
Anyone interested in participating should call 885-3650 by 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Pairings for the opening round of this weekend’s Civitan Open Tennis Tournament have been announced.
First round match-ups for the event to be held at the Union City Middle School courts are as follows:

War Eagles to play
on Milan’s gridiron

Milan’s Johnie Hale Stadium is now the site for the West Tennessee War Eagles Saturday night game against the Mississippi Raiders.
The winner of said contest will be the Gridiron Development Football League’s Southeast Div-ision champion.
Kickoff is slated for 7.
Previously, West Tenn-essee was supposed to play this weekend’s game  in Memphis before Milan offered its facility.
Both the War Eagles and Raiders are 6-3 heading into Saturday’s contest. The league’s playoffs begin on Aug. 28.
UT communications
to come from Stanton

KNOXVILLE (AP) — Tennessee has named Jimmy Stanton as associate athletics director for communications.
Stanton will oversee the Volunteers’ media relations, public relations, internet communications, broadcasting and photography. He replaces Tiffany Carpenter, who left Tennessee in July to found Carpenter Public Relations.
Stanton holds a graduate degree in sports management from Tennessee and previously worked at Kentucky as the Wildcats’ executive director of public relations. He has also worked as the director of media relations for the Houston Astros and assistant director of media relations for the Tennessee Titans.
