Charges have been levied against a Hornbeak man in connection with a recent hit-and-run traffic accident in Union City.
Clifton Lee Turner, 21, of 1303 North Shawtown Road was arrested Tuesday evening on charges of tampering with evidence, leaving the scene of an accident, improper registration and financial responsibility law violation, according to a Union City Police Department report.
The charges stem from a July 26 accident at the exit of Ryan’s at West Reelfoot Avenue and Old Troy Road in Union City — where police arrived to find a vehicle with its front bumper knocked off and learned the vehicle that allegedly caused the damage had left the scene.
Police reported after the wreck that 82-year-old Gerald P. Roper of 105 Allison St., Hickman, Ky., was attempting to exit the Ryan’s parking lot to go to the stop sign at West Reelfoot Avenue when the right front of a green pickup truck struck the left front of his 1998 Jeep Cherokee, causing the bumper to come off. The pickup apparently entered a small ditch in the area, then continued up a dirt bank to the roadway at Old Troy Road. From there, it was seen going westbound on Old Troy Road.
Tuesday, through a Crime Stoppers tip, police located a person to whom Turner had allegedly traded the truck involved in the accident and then obtained a warrant for Turner’s arrest.
According to the police report, Turner told police he fled the accident scene because he had no insurance and the tags were on the wrong vehicle.
