Fire claims UC woman

A Union City woman died early Sunday after a fire broke out in her apartment.
Alice Denise Pirtle, 39, of 705 West Washington Ave., Apt. 7, was found dead in her apartment about two hours after firefighters responded to a fire there. (See related obituary, Page 8.)
The fire was reported at 5:55 a.m., Union City Fire Chief Kelly Edmison said.
According to a Union City Police Department report, police responded to the apartment fire just before 6 a.m. and firefighters were on the scene to extinguish the blaze. At 8:28 a.m., police were summoned back to the apartment due to a death. Firefighters told police a woman had been found in Apt. 7, where the fire started, and they indicated it appeared she had been overcome by smoke.
Fire officials said it appeared a pot had been left on the stove in the apartment.
The incident is under investigation by police since it involves a death.
