MEMPHIS — Terminix will crown a champion critter-cooker at its “Bug Cookoff” at The Children’s Museum of Memphis on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The event, which is included with admission to the museum, will feature two traditional chefs and a bug chef from Audubon Insectarium in New Orleans battling in an “Iron Chef”-style competition, using bugs as the main ingredients.
The three chefs at the event will include Zack Lemann, entomologist, Audubon Insectarium; Scott DeLarme, executive chef, Owen Brennan’s; and Jason Severs, chef and owner, BARI Ristorante e Enoteca. The emcee for the event will be Ben Vaughn, chef and owner of Grace Restaurant Memphis and Au Fond Farmtable.
The contestants will be given the same ingredients and an insect from which they must create a dish that will be judged on site to determine a winner. The first session will feature the preparation of an insect-based entrée, while the second will consist of dessert concoctions made from bugs and traditional cooking ingredients.
The cooking competition is a special program for “Harry’s Big Adventure: My Bug World!,” an exhibit presented by Terminix that takes visitors on a unique journey through the habitats, sights, sounds and social structures of bugs. “Harry’s Big Adventure: My Bug World!” will be at The Children’s Museum of Memphis through Aug. 22.
