• His players are not on campus, but that doesn’t mean UT Martin head baseball coach Bubba Cates is not paying attention to them as they spend the summer playing in various collegiate leagues across the country.
This past week, in the Valley League in Virginia and the Texas Collegiate League, rising junior Jordan Owen and rising sophomore Alec Mills posted career numbers.
Owen led the New Market Rebels to a 14-3 victory over the Westchester Royals. He went 5-6, with three runs, six RBI, two home runs, and a stolen base.
Owen, who set a new UT Martin single season home run record this past spring with 18, is hitting .352.
Down in the Texas Collegiate League, Mills continues to prove his worth for the Brazos Valley Bombers. Mills has pitched 20 straight innings without allowing an earned run.
• UT Martin’s assistant men’s basketball coach Jay Bowen has accepted a similar position at UT Chattanooga.
Bowen, who spent two seasons as an aide in the Skyhawk program to Bret Campbell and Jason James, respectively, will replace David Conrady on the UTC bench.
