Two Union City police officers were assaulted early today when a firework exploded between them.
The incident occurred about 1 a.m. today while Union City Police Department patrol officer Tim Wright and investigator Derrick O’Dell were standing on the East Gate Village parking lot, located off Nash Street, observing the area.
According to a police department report, the two officers observed something fly through the air toward them and land between them. They realized the object was a lit firework but did not have time to move away before it discharged.
Police reported the firework was an “artillery shell” type that, when exploded, throws balls of colored black powder “stars” in all directions. The two officers and both of their patrol vehicles were struck.
Wright reported he had to brush fire off his pants and was struck in the left arm, causing a slight burn.
Officers searched the area but could not locate any offender and people who were questioned would not give officers any information, according to the report.
