MEMPHIS (AP) — Some much-needed rainfall is being chased by very hot and humid weather across Tennessee.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for all of West Tennessee and the western half of Middle Tennessee through Thursday evening, cautioning that afternoon heat indexes above 100 degrees are expected. The heat values in the western counties could reach 109 degrees.
NWS forecaster Corey Chaskelson in Memphis said there could be a break on Friday through the weekend, but it would bring its own hazard — potentially severe thunderstorms.
Chaskelson said after the storms, next week’s forecast calls for another round of hot and humid weather.
Thermometer readings of 97 degrees are expected in Memphis on Thursday; 96 degrees in Nashville; lower to mid-90s in the Tri-Cities and Knoxville; and mid-90s in Chattanooga.
The chance of weekend thunderstorms applies statewide.
