CHATTANOOGA (AP) — The only survivor from a fishing boat run down by a barge tow near Chattanooga says he and his two companions didn’t see the approaching barges soon enough to act.
David “Christopher” Wilkey told the Chattanooga Times Free Press he, his uncle Richard Wilkey of Soddy-Daisy and Tom Spindle of Elizabethton were running a catfish trotline and didn’t see the nine-barge tow on Saturday until it was about a football field length away.
The elder Wilkey and Spindle were killed in the resulting collision.
