Cates named extended campus, online studies executive director Posted: Wednesday, June 23, 2010 9:04 pm Interim director Dr. Tommy Cates was recently named as the executive director of the University of Tennessee at Martin Office of Extended Campus and Online Studies. Cates, who received a bachelor’s degree from UT Martin and master’s degree and doctorate from University of Memphis, previously served as director of UT Online at UT Martin since 2001. He joined the UT Martin faculty as an assistant professor of management in 1983. “Dr. Cates is widely respected as one of the South’s pioneers in online education. He also has an impressive history of scholarship and a record of outreach and entrepreneurship that fits our extended campus mission well,” said Dr. Jerald Ogg, vice chancellor for academic affairs. “He has done an excellent job in an interim capacity and I look forward to his continued contributions to the academic affairs leadership team.” As part of his responsibility, Cates directs all off-campus academic operations. These operations include online courses, dual-enrollment courses in high schools, non-credit courses and courses offered through the UT Martin Centers in Selmer, Jackson, Ripley and Parsons. “This job is an opportunity to balance many operations off campus and to help the off-campus students and staff feel a part of the campus and UT as a whole.
