Larry Sherwood, director of Van Ayer, is joined by business leaders, community members and Weakley County Chamber of Commerce Director Barbara Virgin during the center’s official grand opening and ribbon cutting Thursday afternoon.
The Press 6.22.10 Summer Place is the newest addition to the nursing home and rehabilitation market. A branch of Van Ayer Nursing and Rehabilitation, Summer Place in Martin is geared to offer a day care atmosphere for adults while their loved ones balance work as well as care.
Summer Place is the second senior adult day care to open outside of Memphis in West Tennessee. It caters to those seniors who require a moderate level of care throughout the day while their loved ones are at work.
“This is a resource for the community,” Summer Place adult day care director Jennifer Ray commented on Thursday.
According to Ray, 79 percent of families in the community are taking care of an elderly loved one and 60 percent of those families are working while taking care of their loved ones.
Summer Place is designed to take the burden off of the family, while providing interaction, needs and a big piece of socialization while an adult is in their care at Summer Place.
It provides medicine management, daily activities, cognitive exercises as well as a support group for their family members. Meals, snacks and drinks are provided throughout the day.
“We offer a one day free trial for those interested in placing a loved one in our adult day care. That trial helps to see if the families’ needs can be met or if this is something that the person would even want to do,” Ray added.
All of the facility’s workers are trained din first aid and CPR. They also offer care plans that are discussed quarterly with family members to discover their goals and if the center is actually meeting their goals.
“We want the family to be very much involved,” Ray said. Summer Place provides cognitive, music, sensation and physical therapy if it is required for their adults in day care.
Families can enroll their loved ones in the center five days a week or one day a week.
Summer Place is open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
