Weakley County baseball standouts Matt Beaty and Dalton Potts spent part of the weekend in the spotlight.
They’re both hoping it won’t be their last moment on a bigger diamond stage.
With numerous collegiate coaches and professional baseball scouts in attendance, the pair participated in the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Showcase last Friday and Saturday in Murfreesboro. Dresden High School’s Beaty and Greenfield High School’s Potts were both selected to play on the team featuring standouts from all high school baseball teams in Regions 7 and 8.
With their team’s 23-man roster comprised of the top talent in Class A through Class AAA and Division II,  the rising seniors were two of only three Class A players on their squad.
Weather disrupted the original showcase schedule, limiting them to a pair of games instead of the previously-announced three games.
In Game 1 on Friday evening, Beaty was in the line-up as the designated hitter batting out of the sixth slot, before taking the field at first base in Game 2 on Saturday. Beaty was the clean-up hitter in the second game. Over the weekend the Dresden slugger proved to be a selective batter. He went 2-for-3 and drew a pair of walks. He also drove in a run.
Showing he is also a steady defender, Beaty started a tough-to-turn 3-6-3 double play on Saturday.
Potts took the mound for two innings of work on Friday night. Pitching the fourth and fifth innings, the Greenfield left-hander gave up just two hits — a double and a single — against the eight batters he faced. He struck out one and allowed one run to score.
