Big bat — Dresden High School catcher Matt Beaty, along with Greenfield’s Dalton Potts, earned a place on the all-star squad representing Regions 7 and 8 in the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Showcase, Murfreesboro.
Weakley County will be represented by two diamond stars at the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Showcase on Friday and Saturday in Murfreesboro. Dresden High School’s Matt Beaty and Greenfield High School’s Dalton Potts were both selected to play on the team representing all high school baseball teams in Region 7 and 8.
The local pair showcased their talent at the Region 7 and 8 tryouts held on May 30 at Houston High School in Germantown. They competed against Class A, AA, AAA and Division II athletes for a spot on the all-star team. More than 55 teams make up the TSSAA’s Regions 7 and 8 in all classifications.
Beaty and Potts received calls from the team’s head coach, Brad Smith, who is also the coach at Tipton Rosemark, on June 8 to announce their selection to the 23-man roster.
When action begins on Friday, the Weakley County duo will be playing before college coaches and scouts. The Region 7 and 8 team will work out on Friday afternoon at 4:30 and will play its first game at 7 that night. On Saturday, their team will play at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Both Potts and Beaty had stellar high school seasons for their junior campaigns. Beaty played primarily at catcher for the DHS Lions but also saw duty on the infield and the pitcher’s mound. The 6-0, 210-pounder had an astounding season at the plate. He batted .619 and hit 19 home runs, setting a school record. He also went the entire season without striking out. For his efforts, Beaty was named the District 13-A MVP.
In addition to the TBCA Showcase this weekend, Beaty will attend the Exposure Showcase at MTSU on June 30 and the Gatlinburg Smokies Showcase on July 24-25. After his attention-grabbing home run numbers this past season, he has been selected to attend the Power Showcase Homerun Derby on Dec. 28-30 in Phoenix, AZ
Potts, helped the GHS Yellowjackets advance to the TSSAA Class A Sectional round for the second consecutive season. The 5-11, 165-pounder pitches and plays center field. This season he posted an 8-3 record with an ERA of 2.29, striking out 92 batters while walking only 17. Potts was named to the regular season District 14-A All-District team and was the District 14-A All-Tournament MVP. Greenfield also won their second district and region tournament titles.
Beaty and Potts are currently teammates on the Tennessee Lightning baseball team, comprised of 17-year-old players. The Lightning finished as runner-up at a 19-and-under tournament in Dyersburg on June 13.
