Mary Hill Gardner

Mrs. Mary Hill Gardner, 97, of Memphis, died Sunday, June 13, 2010, at St. Peter Villa Nursing Home, Memphis.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hill Family Cemetery in Knox County, near Knoxville with High Point Funeral Chapel of Memphis in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Gardner was the daughter of the late Dr. James C. and Candace Underwood Hill. She was the widow of John Martin Gardner Jr. She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, taught in the Knox County School System and after completing a master’s degree, joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee at Martin.  After moving to Memphis, she was a strong supporter and fundraiser for the WKNO, educational television for the mid-south region. She was a member of Whitehaven Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John Martin III and Sylvia Betz Gardner of New Tripoli, Pa. and New York City.
She was also preceded in death by one son, James Hill Gardner.
