NEW INTERSTATE — Like a small army of mighty metal beasts on the move, heavy equipment gradually changes the lay of the land near the intersection of Mount Zion Road and Brevard Road near Union City, where an interchange for the future I-69 super highway will be constructed. It is part of an overall $29.8 million project that spans 4.5 miles, according to Nicole Lawrence, spokesman for the Tennessee Department of Transportation. “Ford Construction Co. of Jackson is the contractor for the project. Vaughn Construction Co. of Waverly is a subcontractor,” she said. “Vaughn is moving dirt to build the roadway. There are places dirt has to be filled in and removed to accomplish building the roadway to the proper design. That will get it to subgrade, and includes seven box culverts and four box bridges.” Target completion date is October 2012.
