Volbert retakes reins
of Milan girl hoopsters

Milan’s new girls’ basketball coach is actually an old one.
Eric Volbert, who led the Lady Bulldogs to four 20-win seasons — including a Class 2A state runnerup finish in 2008 — during a seven-year stint, is returning to the post after a year as an assistant with the Union University men.
Volbert first Milan team in 2002 went 5-21, but he quickly built the Lady Bulldogs into a solid contender in rugged District 13AA.
He replaces Jessie (Henson) Doyle, who starred on the prep level at Bradford and then collegiately at Union before getting her first head coaching job at Milan, where she lasted just one season.

TCA hurler Renfroe
is Player of the Year

Trinity Christian Academy softball standout Ellen Renfroe has been named the 2010 Gatorade Tennessee Softball Player of the Year.
Renfroe, who will play this afternoon against South Fulton’s Kayla Davidson and the Union City duo of Paige Fisher and Karly Hollis in the West Tennessee All-Star Game in Jackson, led TCA to its four Class A state title in five years.
Along the way, Trinity Christian eliminated SF with a 4-0 decision in the loser’s bracket finale.
The 5-foot-10 hurler, who has signed to join her older sister Ivy on the Tennessee softball team, finished the 2010 campaign with a 40-2 record and a 0.15 earned run aveage.
All totaled, Ellen Renfroe struck out 545 hitters this season and walked just 14.
