Weakley West Relay set for Friday evening

Weakley West Relay set for Friday evening
People in Martin and Sharon will gather on the grounds of the University of Tennessee at Martin on Friday evening for one final Relay for Life event in Weakley County this year.
Thus far, nearly $54,000 has been raised by teams of the Weakley West Relay event planned for Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12.
Twenty teams will join together to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back against cancer in honor of those who have survived and in remembrance those who have fought and lost their battle with cancer.
Honorary chairs of this year’s Weakley West Relay event are Ruth Glisson and Eleanor Moody, posthumously.
The event kicks off at 3 p.m. on Friday in the UT Martin Hardy-Graham Stadium parking lot.
The Survivor’s Reception will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday and the opening ceremonies begin at 6 p.m.
The Luminaria Ceremony is at 9:30 p.m. on Friday. The event will also feature live entertainment by local rock and cover band Riptide. Survivors will, as is tradition, make their ceremonious laps through the parking lot and health vendors will be on hand with door prizes and literature.
Luminaries can be purchased for $5 each in honor or in remembrance of a loved one throughout that evening. The event will conclude Saturday at 9 a.m.
Everyone is invited to attend the free community event in an effort to fight cancer.
