UC parks program out to make happy ‘campers’
Area youths looking for a summer athletics fix need not worry.
The beginning of the Union City Parks and Recreation Summer Instructional Program is approaching.
All totaled, athletic camps are being offered in basketball, baseball, football, weight training, softball, tennis and cheerleading.
All of camps are to be monitored by members of the Union City High School coaching staffs.
The girls’ basketball camp begins on Monday (and runs each day next week from 9 a.m. until noon) for children entering grades 3-5 at the UCHS gym.
A camp for girls in grades 6-8 is scheduled for the same dates with daily drills set to begin at 1 p.m. and end at 4.
Baseball camp is also scheduled to begin on Monday and run through all of next week with grades 3-5 taking part from 9 a.m. until noon each day and grades 6-8 participating each afternoon from 1 until 4.
Boys’ basketball players entering grades 3-5 can participate June 28-July 2 in a camp that starts at 9 a.m. and ends at noon each day.
Boys to be in grades 6-8 have camp the same week with each day starting at 1 and ending at 4.
Football camps are to be offered in July.
The staff of the Class A state champion Union City football team is scheduled to be in charge of the gridiron instructional camps.
Students entering grades 3-5 will receive pointers July 12-16 from 9 a.m. until noon each day.
Meanwhile, grades 6-8 will hold camp July 19-23 with the same morning hours as the camp for the younger football players.
There will also be a boys’ weight-training camp for grades 6-8 (June 21-25) from 9 a.m. until noon daily.
Softball camp (open to grades 5-8), is set for July 14-18 at Graham Park.
That diamond camp will begin at 9 a.m. and end at noon each day.
In case of rain, the softball, baseball and football camps will be moved to the UCHS multi-purpose building.
Margie Smith is again offering her time to teach tennis basics to beginners this summer.
For that event, participants must pre-register by picking up and completing a registration form at the Union City Parks and Recreation Office on Sunswept Drive.The tennis clinic is scheduled to take place from 9 until 10:30 each morning during the week of July 5-9.
Cheerleaders have camp June 21-25 at Union City Middle School.
Marsha Stokes is the instructor for the yellers and tumblers.
The instructional camp for girls entering grades 3-5 will be held each day from 9:30 in the morning until 11:45, while the 6-8 grades camp is slated to begin each day at 1 p.m. and end at 3:15.
The cheerleading camp is limited to 50 participants per session.
