MURFREESBORO — Same face, different place.
Defending champion Trinity Christian Academy ended South Fulton’s season for the third straight season today — this year in the Class 1A state tournament — with a 4-0 victory over the Devilettes this morning.
The loss means SF, the last public school remaining in the double-elimination event, will finish third — matching the program’s best-ever finish — and with a school-record 34 wins.
TCA (47-2), which ended South Fulton’s season the last two years in sectional play, will now face Chattanooga Grace Academy, seeking its fourth state title in five years.
University of Tennessee-bound Ellen Renfroe struck out nine Devilettes and allowed just two hits and three baserunners to reach.
Natalie Nelson’s two-out RBI double in the sixth broke a scoreless tie in the sixth and TCA tacked on three insurance runs in their final at-bat.
“We proved we belong here today, and I was so proud and pleased that we bounced back and proved that after a couple of sub-par games defensively the last two nights,” SF head coach Curt Lee said afterward.
Paxton Sisson and Marina Barclay had the Devilettes’ two hits — both singles — in the second and fifth innings, respectively.
SF’s Haley McKinney matched Renfroe’s pitching over the first five frames before the Lady Lions broke through.
