Miss Townes awarded teachers’ scholarship | Obion County/Union City Retired Teachers Association
Obion County/Union City Retired Teachers Association recently awarded a scholarship to Katherine “Katie” Townes of Union City.
The association awards a scholarship each year to a student who plans to major in education.
Miss Townes is the daughter of Bill and Martha Townes. She is the granddaughter of Ann and Bill Townes, Roy Wehman and the late Vera Wehman, all of Union City.
She is a graduate of Union City Magnet School and plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin.
While in high school, she was a member of Union City High School softball team, Union City High School Marching and concert bands, Spanish Club, Junior Civitan, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Key Club, Science Club and Pep Club.
She is a member of First United Methodist Church in Union City, where she is involved in United Methodist Youth, Senior High Sunday School and Wednesday Night Together. She is a Bible School volunteer and has been on the Team Effort mission trip and the Arkansas mission trip.
Miss Townes has helped pack and deliver baskets for Chimes for Charity, has raised money for Obion County Cancer Agency as a member of the First United Methodist Church Walk of Hope Team, has volunteered for Cystic Fibrosis 5K Run and for Union City Parks softball camp and is a Red Cross blood drive donor.
A Tennessee Scholar, she has been on the honor roll and has earned the Algebra II Student Excel award. She is a Tornado Pride recipient and a Kiwanis Club Student of the Month. She also was awarded the softball Academic Achievement Award and softball Gold Glove Award. She participated in the Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City  Nursing “Crash Course.”
She enjoys sports, traveling and outdoor activities.
