Jewel Newton Posted: Wednesday, May 26, 2010 12:16 pm The Messenger, May 25, 2010 Completed arrangements are being announced for Iva Jewel (Shands) Newton, 83, of Martin, who died 2 a.m. May 24, 2010, at Volunteer Community Hospital in Martin. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Edmaiston-Mosley Funeral Home, with the Revs. Dwayne Ervin and Eddie Mallonee officiating. Burial will follow in East Side Cemetery in Martin. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 5-8 p.m. Wednesday. Pallbearers will be Paul Adams, Leroy Segraves, the Revs. Jerry Leggett and Rick Bell, Chris Edmaiston, Eugene Edmaiston and Lyndell Caldwell. Mrs. Newton was born June 5, 1926, in Lauderdale County, daughter of the late Jesse Dalton and Bessie Mae (Lyell) Shands. She married L.B. “Shorty” Newton Dec. 28, 1946. He died May 17, 1975. She had been a homemaker and a certified nurse’s assistant. She was a member of Union City Second Baptist Church and of the Faith Sunday School Class and Young at Heart church group. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Brad Wilson of Martin; her son, Larry Newton of Union City; her brother, Bernice Shands of Tupelo, Miss.; four grandchildren, Amy Hernandez of Porterville, Calif., Lori Beth Wilson and Libbi Wilson, both of Martin, and David Newton of Union City; and five great-grandchildren, Katie Edmaiston of Porterville and Braden Newton, Parker Newton, Chase Vancleave and Ethan Vancleave, all of Union City.
