Skyhawk softball
wins in OVC opener

In front of a reported packed house at Bettye Giles Field Thursday night, the No. 1 overall seed UT Martin softball team opened play in the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Championship with a dramatic 3-2 win over No. 4 Eastern Illinois.
Junior Kate Vanderham hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to propel the Skyhawks to their opening-round victory.
With the win, the Skyhawks improve their record to 46-9 on the year. They face second-seeded Jacksonville State at 4 this afternoon.
OVC Pitcher of the Year Paij Lintz went the distance, striking out nine in the process to earn the mound victory.

UC alum Chandler
to play at nationals

Union City product and Union golfer Ryan Chandler will compete at the 59th annual NAIA Men’s National Golf Championship, starting on Tuesday in Silvis, Ill.
Chandler and the Union team, which claimed the TranSouth Conference championship, tees off at 7 Tuesday morning for the first round.
The Bulldog golf team hits the links at the TPC Deere Run course on Wednesday afternoon at 1:30.

Wynridge victors
just a shot ahead

The team of David Donell, Bill Rodgers, Danny Arnold, Dale Batchelor and Walter Shumate combined to shoot a 9-under-par and win the weekly men’s scramble at Wynridge Greens in Troy Thursday.
Meanwhile, the team of Lucas Wils, Kirk Rogers, Clay Prince, Corey Grady and Austin Suratt got second place with an 8-under.

Lady links triumph
is of slim variety

The Hickman County Country Club’s Ladies Golf League played on Thursday night.
The team of Betty Moore, Evelyn Whitten and Carol Lattus won the competition with a 1-under-par score.
Meanwhile, the combination of Linda Moore, Anne Kincade, Joyce Bell and Charlotte Hall was second at even-par.
