NASHVILLE (AP) — The full Senate has passed a proposal that allows individuals legally in the United States to take driver’s license tests in one of the four languages offered.
The measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Bill Ketron of Murfreesboro was approved 22-10 Monday evening.
Ketron says those without proper documentation will have to take the test in “English only.” He says his bill “sends a message” on Tennessee’s preference for giving the tests in English.
Opponents say the measure sends the wrong message to potential foreign investors in Tennessee.
The companion bill is awaiting a vote in the House Budget Subcommittee.
