|UT Martin first baseman Wes Patterson connected on his 33rd career home run to become the program’s all-time longball leader Sunday, but host Morehead State rallied back from an 8-1 deficit to salvage a 10-9 victory. |
Patterson, a Memphis native, connected on his 12th homer of the campaign in the first inning, which shot him ahead of Jim Willis (32 home runs in 1983-85) on the all-time career home run list.
He also added another hit on Sunday for his 14th multi-hit game of the season.
Along with Patterson, four other Skyhawks turned in multi-hit days. Cody Terry was 3-for-5 with four RBI, Trey Karlen finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, Ty Nelson was 2-for-4 and Brent Morris compiled a 2-for-5 worksheet to pace the Skyhawk offense.
The Skyhawks baseball team closes out its home schedule this week, beginning with a game against Belmont on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
UT Martin also hosts Tennessee Tech at home on Saturday and Sunday.
In other UTM spring sports news, the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Softball Tournament field is set.
UT Martin earned the top seed and the right to host the three-day event that will start on Thursday and end on Saturday.
Jacksonville State earned the No. 2 seed and along with the Skyhawks will receive a first-round bye.
Morehead State is the third seed in the tourney followed by Eastern Illinois, Murray State and Tennessee Tech.
Tournament action is set to begin on Thursday with the first game getting under way at 11 a.m with Morehead State against Tennessee Tech.
Murray State plays Eastern Illinois at 1:30 Thursday, while Jacksonville State gets the winner of the Morehead/Tennessee Tech game at 4.
The Skyhawk softball team begins play at 6 Thursday against the victor of the earlier Murray State-Eastern Illinois contest.
