Twisters fit with elite at top
The elite track teams in West Tennessee had to make room for Union City Middle School near the top.
The Twister thinclads brought home fourth-place honors — out of over 40 teams competing in both girls’ and boys’ action — from the West Sectional in Memphis Thursday.
On the boys’ side, UC had 33 points, 25 behind the total of meet champion Sherwood. Ridgeway was second with 52 tallies, while American Way totaled 42.
The Twister girls had 35 points for the meet. American Way won the girls’ championship with 80 points.
Snowden was second with 83 and Dyersburg got 42 to gain a team bronze medal.
Lady Tornado Jackie Hudson was the only gold medalist among the two local squads.
Hudson won first-prize in both the shot put and discus, according to UCMS boys’ track coach Bobby Williams.
Hudson’s top throw in the discus was around 96 feet.
No other girls’ statistics were known by Williams.
Lady Twister track coach Hunter Rice was not at school today and he did not respond to The Messenger’s phone calls before press time this morning.
All totaled, the Union City boys gained two bronze medals.
The 800-meter relay team comprised of Daulton Parish, Iroa Smith, Dontarius Owens and Jamie Hyde claimed third.
Distance runner Cesar Landeros got third in the two-mile.
Otherwise, Tristan Jern-igan was fourth in the discus, while Donte Simpson was fifth in the 400-meter dash.
The Twisters’ one-mile relay team (Parish, Simpson, Cody Easley and Tyren Brown) also came across the line in fifth-place.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Parish was sixth, while Jamie Hyde finished in a like position in the 100-meter dash.
