The Obion Central softball team is in uncharted territory.
South Fulton’s Chelsie Pitts tags a Westview baserunner out during action on Thursday afternoon.
The Lady Rebels edged Gibson County 4-3 in the opening round of the District 13AA Tournament to claim their school-record 22nd victory on Thursday evening.
The current win total surpasses that of the program’s most successful season — 21 in 1996 when OC finished fifth in the state.
In other Thursday action, the Obion Central baseball team was downed 9-4 in the first round of the 13AA Tournament against host Dyersburg.
South Fulton finished its softball regular season on Thursday with a 4-2 defeat to perennial Class 2A State Tournament entry Westview.
Today’s slate has a trio of baseball tournament games on tap.
At Dyersburg, OC plays Gibson County at 4 in a do-or-die game. If the Rebels prevail, they would play at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at USA Baseball Stadium in Millington against the winner of today’s Westview-Crockett County game.
The District 14A Baseball Tournament also begins today with the opening round at the higher seed. Union City hosts Lake County at 6 and South Fulton travels to Greenfield for a 5:30 contest.
Both UC and SF will play on Saturday as the tournament shifts to Union City’s Elam Stadium. If the Twisters prevail this evening, they play the winner of today’s Trenton-Humboldt contest. Should Union City fall against LC, the locals play at 1:30 Saturday against the loser of the aforementioned game.
If South Fulton wins this afternoon, they play the winner of today’s Halls-Bradford game at 4 Saturday. If the Red Devils fall, they battle the loser of said game at 11.
OC 4, Gibson Co. 3
In the bottom of the seventh, Liesel Grossner got herself to third — via a single and two stolen bases — and fellow senior Alex Rapp did the rest.
Rapp put the ball in play, singling to second as Grossner raced home safely for the winning run.
For the evening, Grossner was the lone Lady Rebel with two hits — registering a pair of safeties.
Otherwise, Olivia Grady tripled, while Brooke Ferrell, Meaghen Strayhorn and Kayla Bramlett all singled once.
Winning pitcher Emily Taylor struck out eight and walked just one.
The Lady Rebels (22-11-1) play Crockett County at 4 on Saturday in winner’s bracket action.
Westview 4, SF 2
The Devilettes got just four hits against the highly-lauded Lady Chargers on Thursday afternoon.
One of those hits was a two-run single by catcher Paxton Sisson in the home half of the fourth inning.
Otherwise, Marina Bar-clay and Austin Peay signee Kayla Davidson both singled and scored and Macy Maxwell also had a single.
On the mound, Haley McKinney started the game, pitching the first four innings and allowing one run on five hits.
Freshman pitcher Sara Reams absorbed the defeat, throwing the final three innings.
South Fulton returns to action on Tuesday at Trenton (5:30) in the semifinals of the District 14A Tournament’s winner’s bracket. The Devilettes (26-10) will face the winner of Monday’s game between Lake County and Trenton.
Dyersburg 9, OC 4
Dustin Smyth, Ethan Davis and Mikey Arnett all had two hits for the Rebels (17-23), while Tanner Cary and Brady York both doubled.
Smyth, Davis, Cary and Arnett all drove in one run.
On the mound, York was tagged with the defeat. The Rebel hurler struck out five in his 41/3 innings on the hill.
Colton Woodward had three punchouts in his 11/3 innings of relief work.
