District champs — Greenfield High School tennis was honored as the regular season champ with the plaque held by(from left) GHS coach Teresa McCall. The team of Meagan Porter and Mallory Robinson won the doubles. Katie McCall won her third singles title.
Neither rain nor competitors could keep Greenfield’s Katie McCall from claiming her third consecutive district tournament singles championship. As a bonus for the Lady Yellowjackets, the duo of Meagan Porter and Mallory Robinson won the first-ever district tournament doubles title for Greenfield.
After two days of rain delays, the District 13 A-AA Tennis Tournament was finally played Tuesday afternoon at Bethel University in McKenzie.
In girls singles, McCall, Greenfield’s No. 1 player, was top seeded and had a bye in the quarterfinals. The No. 2 seed was Kristen Garcia, Milan’s top player who also got a bye. Haley Perkins, Greenfield’s No. 3 player, won her quarterfinal match over Bethany Weston of Camden, 8-6, which put Perkins into the semis against Garcia.
In the semifinals, Garcia had a tough time with Perkins in the first set, but eventually won, 6-3, 6-0. McCall rolled over Camden’s No. 1 player, Kelly Arnold, 6-1, 6-0 in the other semi. In the finals, McCall started fast and never let up, defeating Garcia, 6-0, 6-0.
In girls doubles, Greenfield was represented by the teams of Hannah Mosely and Emily Allen and Mallory Robinson and Meagan Porter. Mosely and Allen, both freshmen, played well in their first district tournament but eventually lost to the more experienced Camden team of Kristen Ragon and Haley Hayes from, 8-4, in the quarterfinals.
Lady Jackets Robinson and Porter were the No. 2 seeded doubles team while Betty Kay Stinson and Kayla Hernandez of Milan was the top seed. In the quarterfinals, Robinson and Porter faced another team from Milan top-seeded Mary Jo Stinson and Emmy Merritt. The Greenfield duo prevailed 8-0. In the semifinals, Robinson and Porter stopped Desiree Douglas and Lana Phillips of Camden, 6-2, 6-2, while Milan’s Mary Jo Stinson and Merritt also advanced.
In the finals, it was the No. 1 seed from Milan versus the No. 2 seed from Greenfield. Robinson and Porter could not be stopped as they secured Greenfield’s first ever doubles district crown by stopping Mary Jo Stinson and Hernandez, 6-2, 6-2.
Greenfield’s Katie McCall, Mallory Robinson, and Meagan Porter all were named to the District 13 A-AA All-District team. All three girls advance to the Region 7 A-AA tournament to be played at Dyersburg. The winners of the regional go on to the state tournament in Murfreesboro.
