MEMPHIS (AP) — Mike Mills of R.E.M. heads a lineup of musicians expected to pay tribute to the late Alex Chilton later this month at the Levitt Shell in Memphis’ Overton Park.
Chiton died March 17 of a heart attack in New Orleans. Levitt Shell had already planned its May 15 spring fundraiser to feature Big Star, Chilton’s ’70s group.
Executive Director Anne Pitts says it was natural to turn the event into a tribute.
A news release from Levitt Shell says Mills has often cited Big Star as a key influence. Big Star original bassist Andy Hummell is also in the lineup, and the musicians will be backed by the last version of Big Star.
Chilton, a Memphis native, had a No. 1 hit as a teenager with “The Letter.”
