Posted: Tuesday, May 4, 2010 8:01 pm BUILD MODELS — Recently 4-Hers in Obion County competed in the 4-H Model Building Contest. 4-Hers were instructed to use what they learned during 4-H Club meetings about recycling to create models used from recyclable items. 4-Hers from each school participated. Lake Road fourth-graders planned their models to go with reading lessons in Becky Parks’ class. They read “Sign of the Beaver,” written by Elizabeth George Spear, which takes place in the 1700s. Each 4-Her in Mrs. Parks’ class recreated a cabin which belonged to Matt, the main character in the story. They were given instructions about materials to collect, such as rocks, sticks and tree bark, along with instructions on how to create the cabin. So much imagination was put into creating Matt’s cabins, since each cabin was different. For example, some of the roofs could be lifted off to display miniature furniture and ladders inside the cabins. Through participation in this contest, 4-Hers had the opportunity to build upon basic life skills including achieving goals and responsible citizenship. “Sign of the Beaver” is a Newberry Honors Book. Lake Road participants included (seated, from left) Cody Gregory, Colton Quick, Coleen Bennett, Hunter Bennett, (standing) Rachel Ross, Brady Ladd, Brianna Johnson and Thomas Mathis.
