MEMPHIS (AP) — A fire erupted at a downtown Memphis oil refinery Thursday, burning one person and sending a thick plume of smoke over the city.
Wayne Cook, a spokesman for the Memphis Fire Department, said a 29-year-old male was taken in critical condition Thursday to the Regional Medical Center with burns over 45 percent of his body.
Cook said the fire was fueled by gasoline or diesel fuel originating from a pipeline at the refinery.
The fire was reported under control by Thursday afternoon.
Cook said two other people were treated at the scene and released.
News helicopter footage from WMC-TV in Memphis showed a large flame erupting from part of the refinery being doused with several streams of water.
