DANDRIDGE (AP) — Davy Crockett’s 1805 marriage license is back in Jefferson County after a court ordered a Tampa, Fla., woman to turn it over.
Margaret Smith has claimed her uncle saved the document from destruction long ago when Jefferson County court officials were discarding old records. Court officials have disputed that account, saying other records from that period are still on file.
The license was featured on the “Antiques Roadshow” television program in 2005, where appraisers estimated its value between $25,000 and $50,000.
Assistant State Archivist Wayne Moore said that under Tennessee law public records cannot be bought or sold. The law also allows public records to be returned from private hands to public control.
Crockett obtained the license to wed Margaret Elder, who married someone else instead.
